On 6 September 2018, the Right to Build Expo Fareham will be bringing its usual collection of local and national experts to the South Eastsharing best practice for growing Custom and Self-build housing.

Anyone working on the new Garden Communities will find the day invaluable, as Fareham Borough Council will be sharing its work so far, examining plot opportunities at Welborne Garden Village, which will ultimately deliver 6,000 homes in total.

NaCSBA knows that research shows that 53% of adults would like to build their own home at some stage in life¹ and the Expos are a key tool in its work to double the sector’s contribution to new homes built annually, taking it to 16% by 2020.

Supporting Custom and Self-build growth

To do this, the Expos are curated to support local authorities and a range of other stakeholders working to provision Custom and Self-build homes, by sharing successful models and examples from the UK and beyond.

Brought to you by the National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA), the Right to Build Task Force and Wood for Good, in partnership, the Right to Build Expo Fareham offers an opportunity for the Right to Build Task Force to showcase its range of work, and illustrate the diversity of the sector.

Hosted by the Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, the Fareham Expo offers insight into the type of work that the Right to Build Task Force is able to offer, as it supported Fareham with its work at Welborne Garden Village.

Architectural designer and TV presenter Charlie Luxton will also be presenting on the day, sharing his experiences of Self-build and his philosophy of how communities can engage with Custom and Self-build, a key sector that the Right to Build Task Force is working to grow.

Michael Holmes, Chair of NaCSBA said: “We are delighted that Fareham Borough Council is bringing forward plans to deliver serviced plots on its ambitious Welborne Garden Village project.

“NaCSBA’s surveys indicate significant demand for Custom and Self-build from affordable homes to one off ‘Grand Designs’ in the area.

“We welcome Fareham BC’s work with The Right to Build Task Force, exploring all opportunities to bring forward more land to help the local community meet its own housing needs, whilst also supporting the local SME builders who will be involved in constructing the new homes.”

The Right to Build Task Force is particularly keen to support community-led groups, and encourages cohousing and Community Land Trusts, among others, to attend as the day will be filled with useful information.

The Right to Build Expo Fareham is on the 6 September 2018 at Ferneham Hall. The event is free for community-led groups and local authorities to attend, of £40 otherwise for the entire day.

Tickets are available online at Eventbrite.
