NaCSBA’s Right To Build Task Force, NaCSBA and Wood for Good, in partnership, are hosting the Right To Build Expo: Unlocking the Potential of Custom and Self-build South West at the Westpoint Centre, Exeter on the 8 March 2018. The day will showcase its work and share best practice for local authorities, developers, landowners, community-led groups and a host of other stakeholders.
This key knowledge-sharing event is the third in the Right To Build series of regional expos, aimed at supporting custom and self-build homes and helping local authority planners and housing teams navigate the Right To Build legislation.
The day offers invaluable insight into the local picture for custom and self-build, sharing progress in the region towards provisioning enough serviced plots to meet this demand.
And this is key, with 33,000 people now signed up to the registers country-wide, and the time for permissioning being just three years.
Building links
The Right To Build Expos bring together all the key stakeholders engaged in the fast-evolving Right To Build market. Through presentations, Q&As and focused seminars, the day drills down into politics, planning, practice and delivery.
It offers connectivity between those active in delivering custom and self-build housing and those who still need to get there – sharing learnings which helps avoid costly mistakes or time-consuming delays.
At the South West Expo planners, self- and custom builders, developers and architects will hear from industry, government and local authority experts, including Cllr. Jeremy Christophers, Leader of Teignbridge District Council; Michael Holmes, Chair, NaCSBA, Richard Bacon MP and Mario Wolf, Director, Right-to-Build Task Force. More speakers will be announced closer to the date.
Experts on the day will share case studies from local and international custom and self-build schemes and in particular with Garden Communities.

- incorporating custom and self-build housing into a Neighbourhood Plan.

NaCSBA’s Right To Build Task Force is an industry body working with business and local authorities to support them as they bring forward custom build and self-build.
The Task Forces has an emphasis to support schemes at scale and with a focus on affordability, so it’s improving the situation for those of you wanting to build or have input into your own home.
It’s had over 150 enquiries about support, and has worked to help pioneering councils and companies capitalise on the Right To Build, the demand registers and what permissioning plots might envision.
Although focused on the industry, the day is open to everyone, and the Task Force encourages community-led and cohousing groups to attend.
The event is at Westpoint Centre, Exeter, 8 March 2018. Tickets are available from Eventbrite and cost £25, or are free for local authorities, Wood for Good supporters and NaCSBA members (but not Self Build Portal users).
