The Scottish Conservatives have called for a plan to help boost self build in order to tackle Scotlands housing shortage.

Citing Scottish government figures that revealedthe number of house completions over the 2015-16 period was at15,854 – down from 16,209 the previous year – the party wants the government to make more land available, provide infrastructure and relax the planning system to facilitate more self-build schemes such as the Maryhill Project near Glasgow

Graham Simpson, the partys local government spokesman, said: The Scottish government should set out a new Grand Designs plan to help councils make it easier for local people turn that dream into a reality.

It doesnt require a lot of money, just the political will to clear away the petty rules that often stop people from taking the plunge. Scotland needs thousands of new homes and theres no reason why that effort shouldnt start with people who want to build their own.
